Vieweg, Schulte named Paul Maaske Award recipients

MOUNT VERNON – Cornell seniors Jillian Schulte (SR/Naperville, Ill.) (volleyball) and Brodie Vieweg (SR/Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) (lacrosse) were recognized as recipients of the 2018 Paul Maaske Scholar-Athlete Awards during Saturday's 'C' Club Breakfast & Athletics Hall of Fame Ceremony over Homecoming Weekend.

The awards are presented to the Cornell female and male student-athlete who in their junior academic year earned a varsity letter and achieved the highest grade point average.

Maaske is Cornell's winningest men's basketball coach with 307 victories in 26 seasons (1956-73, 75-84). Maaske piloted the Rams to six conference titles and five NCAA Tournament berths.

Schulte accumulated a 4.0 grade point average through the 2017-18 academic year. She is pursuing a double major in Medical Anthropology and Ethnic Studies with a minor in Biology.

As a junior, Schulte was named to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team and selected Honorable Mention All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Schulte is a two-time recipient of the Midwest Conference Elite 20 Award (highest volleyball GPA).

Schulte was the 2017 MWC Volleyball Player of the Year, setting the program record for assists in a season. She's led the Rams to three MWC regular-season titles and two NCAA berths.

Vieweg owns a 3.87 GPA through his junior year. He is majoring in Kinesiology with a Psychology minor.

A two-year starter, Vieweg has been tabbed to the Academic All-Midwest Lacrosse Conference Team during both of his seasons on the Hilltop. Vieweg helped the Rams establish a school record with seven wins in 2017, which the team equaled in 2018.
