Davis' goal lifts Rams to 3-2 win in double OT

MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's men's soccer team climbed back into the Midwest Conference tourney hunt with a big 3-2 win over Lawrence University in double overtime on Senior Day.

Tyler Davis (JR/St. Andrews, Jamaica) scored the game-winning goal four minutes into the second overtime period. Facundo Benavidez (SR/Buenos Aires, Argentina) set Davis up for a fantastic effort from long range. The shot beat the Lawrence goalkeeper into the top left corner.

Lawrence (8-5-1 overall, 4-2-0 MWC) struck first with 12 minutes left in the first half. The Rams (4-8-3 overall, 2-2-2 MWC) came out in the second half strong. Andrew Lopez (FR/Aurora, Colo.) scored the first goal for the Rams after Davis set him up for the assist, tying the score at 1-1.

Lawrence went ahead again with just 15 minutes left in the match. Cornell once again fought back.

Justin Howe (SO/Sedalia, Colo.) evened the score at 2-2 with just two minutes to go in regulation. Benavidez drove a free kick into the box and Galen Westervelt (FR/Lopez Island, Wash.) set Howe up for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Cornell outshot Lawrence 20-16 in the game. Benavidez led the Rams with five shots. Howe had four shot attempts. Sam Duff (JR/Fort Collins, Colo.), Davis and Lopez each had three shots. Daniel Edwards (SO/Lake Worth, Fla.) and Maxwell Ishmael (SR/Ossining, N.Y.) had one shot apiece.

Tom Gallagher (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) started the game in net for the Rams. He played all 104 minutes and made four saves, two in the overtime periods.
