MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's women stayed in the thick of the Midwest Conference soccer title chase Sunday with a hard-fought 2-2 double-overtime draw at home against Ripon.
The Rams (10-4-2 overall) ran their unbeaten streak to 10 matches and moved to 4-0-2 in conference play. Cornell stands third in the MWC race with 14 points and three contests to go in the regular season.
Knox (19 points) is atop the MWC standings at 6-0-1, followed by Monmouth (15 points) at 5-2.
Cornell has already secured its first season with double-digit wins since 2002 (13-6-1). The Rams haven't lost a match since Sept. 22.
Senior Sofia Schnur (SR/Redwood City, Calif.) played a role in both of Cornell's goals against Ripon (3-8-2, 1-1-2 MWC), raising her team-leading point total to 28, which is tied for the most in the MWC.
Schnur's 10th goal of the year evened this match at 2-2 with 22 minutes left in regulation. The score stood through two 10-minute overtime sessions.
The Red Hawks struck first at the 26-minute mark, breaking through a stingy Cornell defense that hadn't surrendered a goal in the previous four matches. The Rams tied it at 1-1 on a Georgia James (SO/Rock City, Ill.) assisted goal from Schnur early in the second half. It was James' sixth goal of the fall.
Cornell's Elise Thomason-Larsen (SO/Superior, Colo.) played all 110 minutes in goal and had one save, which came in the first overtime.
The Rams outshot the Red Hawks, 14-9. Schnur led the way with three attempts. Dajana Scott-Smith (JR/Aurora, Colo.), Layne Pullen (JR/Vail, Ariz.), Sydney Hancox (FR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Sam O'Brien (SO/Evergreen, Colo.) fired two shots apiece.
Coming up – Cornell travels to play Grinnell (6-5-3, 3-1-2 MWC) in a pivotal 4 p.m. match Wednesday.
