Rams make history, clinch MWC Tournament berth

DE PERE, Wis. – Cornell's women's soccer team has qualified for the Midwest Conference Tournament for the first time in program history.

The Rams' MWC regular-season title hopes were dashed Sunday in a tough 1-0 loss to St. Norbert at Schneider Stadium, snapping Cornell's impressive unbeaten streak at 11 matches.

Coach Jose Fajardo's squad (11-5-2 overall, 5-1-2 MWC) still has a chance to finish as high as second in the league race with one match remaining against three-time defending champion Knox (12-4-2, 7-0-1 MWC) at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mount Vernon.

The Rams stand third with 17 points, trailing Monmouth (6-2 MWC, 18 points) and Knox (22 points). Knox has locked up the regular-season championship and will host the four-team MWC Tournament Nov. 8-9 in Galesburg, Ill.

While sitting idle on Saturday, Cornell clinched its first postseason berth since it made the Iowa Conference Tournament in 2008.

The Rams came up short in a defensive battle with the Green Knights (8-8-1, 4-3-1 MWC). St. Norbert struck for an early goal just eight minutes into the match and made it stand. It was only the third goal Cornell had allowed in seven contests.

Cornell goalkeeper Nicole Trenholm (SO/Plainfield, Ill.) played all 90 minutes and collected seven saves, including five after intermission. The Rams were outshot for the match, 9-4.

Ashley Quesada (SR/Blaine, Wash.) attempted two shots on goal for the Rams. Sofia Schnur (SR/Redwood City, Calif.) and Sydney Hancox (FR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) had one attempt apiece.

The Rams were held scoreless for only the second time this season. Sunday marked the team's first loss since Sept. 22.
