Wulf, Jarvis victorious in final home dual vs. No. 5 Kohawks

MOUNT VERNON – Cornell seniors Jake Wulf (SR/Odebolt, Iowa) and Nic Jarvis (SR/Iowa City, Iowa) were victorious in their final home wrestling meet, although the Rams came up short in the annual Bremner Cup dual against fifth-ranked Coe, 34-9, before a large crowd Friday night in the Small Sport Center.

The rival Kohawks (9-2) grabbed an 11-0 lead through two bouts and wound up scoring bonus points in six matches to draw even in the 2019-20 Bremner Cup All-Sport Series at 5-5 with five head-to-head competitions remaining.

Wulf put Cornell (3-5) on the scoreboard with a 4-3 decision over Nick Elias at 141 pounds. Wulf (12-16) posted the go-ahead takedown in the second period and held on during a scoreless third.

Jarvis recorded his 75th collegiate victory with a hard-fought 4-2 decision over Luke Silva at 165. Jarvis (26-10) tallied a takedown in each of the first two periods en route to his team-leading 26th win of the season.

In the marquee match of the night at 184, the Rams received a 4-2 sudden victory from junior Bryce Oveson (JR/Wilton, Iowa) in a showdown with all-American Josh Edel. Oveson countered an Edel shot attempt for the winning takedown with 20 seconds left in overtime.

Oveson scored a reversal in the third period that helped extend the match. He improved to 18-3 on the season, while Edel slipped to 16-7.

The Kohawks posted pins at 125 (Alex Friddle over Griffin Gravel (FR/Wyoming, Iowa), 2:29), 149 (Josh Gerke over Klayton Keller (SO/Des Moines, Iowa), 3:26) and 285 (Kaleb Reaves over Alex Heisdorffer (JR/Walford, Iowa), 3:38). At 133, Coe's Brock Henderson earned a 16-0 technical fall over freshman Evan Husko (FR/Wauconda, Ill.).

Coe recorded major decisions from Tristin Westphal at 174 (10-2 over John Marsh (JR/Denver, Colo.)) and second-ranked Taylor Mehmen at 197 (14-2 over Kendale McCoy (SR/Oak Park, Ill.)). Cornell's Casey Allen (SO/Gilberts, Ill.) dropped a 10-3 decision to Gabe Fiser at 157.

The Kohawks held an 18-4 advantage in takedowns and accumulated 22 near-fall points for the dual.
