Flurry of pins push Rams past Simpson, 32-16

INDIANOLA – Cornell's wrestling team broke a tight dual meet with three consecutive pins at the upper weights for a 32-16 victory over Simpson Thursday night in Cowles Fieldhouse.

The Rams (2-1) registered five bonus-point wins in the dual and beat American Rivers Conference foe Simpson (1-6) for the 17th straight time in the series.

Cornell clung to a 14-13 lead with four matches remaining when the Rams broke it open. Junior 174-pounder Colin Honderd (JR/Ankeny, Iowa) (1-2) started the late charge with a pin in 5:34 over Shyler Langley.

Seniors Bryce Oveson (SR/Wilton, Iowa) and Trevor Trende (SR/Cresco, Iowa) followed with quick falls in the first period to seal the team win. Oveson (3-0) turned Andrew Wolff to his back in 1:22 at 184. Trende (1-1) needed only 2:08 to pin Shane Mathias at 197, giving the Rams a 32-13 advantage.

Klayton Keller (JR/Des Moines, Iowa) (2-1) recorded Cornell's other pin on the night, flattening Jakob Slavin in 2:19 at 149.

Freshman 141-pounder Cristian Dixon (FR/Saint Joseph, Mo.) (4-0) stayed unbeaten with a 17-2 technical fall in 6:12. Evan Husko (SO/Wauconda, Ill.) scored a 10-3 decision in the 133-pound bout, improving his season mark to 3-1.

Cornell dropped 3-1 decisions at 165 (Dalton Cockman over Casey Allen (JR/Gilberts, Ill.)) and heavyweight (Colton Kinnison over Alex Heisdorffer (SR/Walford, Iowa)).

Freshman Jonah Kokin (FR/Woodland Hills, Calif.) lost by fall at 125. Sophomore Cory Stewart (SO/Riverside, Iowa) gave up a 16-5 major decision at 157.    

Coming up – The Rams return to the mat Saturday for a 2 p.m. home dual with Fontbonne in the Small Sport Center.
