Rams stamp Senior Day with dominant 48-0 dual win

MOUNT VERNON – All five of Cornell's senior starters had their hand raised in victory Saturday and celebrated a 48-0 team triumph over Fontbonne in the Senior Day wrestling dual inside the Small Sport Center.

Seniors Austin Thomas (SR/Waterford, Wis.), John Marsh (SR/Denver, Colo.), Bryce Oveson (SR/Wilton, Iowa), Trevor Trende (SR/Cresco, Iowa) and Alex Heisdorffer (SR/Walford, Iowa) were recognized prior to the meet, and then did their part in helping the Rams (3-1) post their largest margin of dual victory since November 2018.

The Rams dominated the visiting Griffins (1-2) for the duration of the 59-minute meet, highlighted by a 23-0 advantage in takedowns. Cornell accumulated 22 near-fall points and scored bonus points in eight of the wins.

Heisdorffer secured the team's shutout with a tough 2-0 decision over Joey Johnson in the heavyweight bout. Holding a 1-0 lead, Heisdorffer (1-2) rode out the Fontbonne wrestler the entire third period for the insurance riding time point.

At 197 pounds, Trende (2-1) wasted little time in pinning Sam Martin (1:35) after an early takedown. The undefeated Marsh (4-0) was workman-like in his 17-1 technical fall at 174, recording 10 near-fall points.

Thomas (2-1) wore down Majahid Smith in a 13-1 major decision at 157. Oveson received a forfeit at 184 to move his season record to 4-0, marking his 71st career victory.

The opening 125-pound match saw Cornell's Jonah Kokin (FR/Woodland Hills, Calif.) (1-3) collect his first collegiate victory with a 9-3 decision over Ahmond Oates. Cornell 133-pounder Evan Husko (SO/Wauconda, Ill.) (4-1) won by forfeit.

Unbeaten freshman Cristian Dixon (FR/Saint Joseph, Mo.) (5-0) was tough on top in a 19-1 technical fall over David Vance that ended midway through the second period. Dixon tallied 12 near-fall points.

At 149, Jacob Ramirez (SO/Kankakee, Ill.) (2-1) delivered eight takedowns in an impressive 17-5 major decision over Josh Presley. Cornell 165-pounder Casey Allen (JR/Gilberts, Ill.) (2-3) sent Christian Trigg to his back late in the first period for a fall in 2:36.

Coming up – Cornell is on the road Friday for a 7 p.m. dual meet with Iowa Wesleyan (2-0) in Mount Pleasant.
