MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's wrestling team tallied bonus points in all seven of its match wins and rolled to a 41-13 season-opening dual victory in 43 minutes over Westminster Saturday inside the Small Multi-Sport Center.
Coach Brent Hamm's Rams (1-0) recorded three falls, capped by sophomore Drake Fox (SO/Danville, Iowa)'s pin in 6:53 in the heavyweight bout. Fox led 1-0 late in the third period when he sent Kobe Kaminski to his back.
Senior John Marsh (SR/Denver, Colo.) made quick work in his 174-pound match, decking Will Harper for a fall in 38 seconds. At 149, sophomore Jacob Ramirez (SO/Kankakee, Ill.) also took care of his opponent in the first period with a pin in 2:32.
Cornell 184-pounder Bryce Oveson (SR/Wilton, Iowa), a two-time regional placewinner, got his senior campaign off to an impressive start with a 16-1 technical fall over Dawson Brandt. Oveson finished his dominant match in the first period.
Evan Husko (SO/Wauconda, Ill.) at 133, Cristian Dixon (FR/Saint Joseph, Mo.) at 141 and Casey Allen (JR/Gilberts, Ill.) at 165 all received forfeit wins for the Rams, who eclipsed the 40-point dual scoring mark for the first time since November 2018.
The most competitive match of the dual was at 157, where Westminster's 2019 NCAA qualifier Sean Sax earned a 6-3 win over Austin Thomas (SR/Waterford, Wis.).
Westminster's Brock Davis pinned freshman Jonah Kokin (FR/Woodland Hills, Calif.) in 3:41 at 125. The Blue Jays also got a 17-3 major decision from Montgomery Mills over Zachary Finn (JR/Island Lake, Ill.).
