MOUNT VERNON – Cornell sophomore Madison Wauters (SO/Winterset, Iowa) was one rebound shy of recording a double-double in Saturday's 69-53 women's basketball loss to Midwest Conference foe Illinois College inside the Small Sport Center.
Wauters had a strong stat line of 14 points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots and a pair of steals. The 6-foot-3 center made 7-of-13 field goals, two weeks after notching her first collegiate double-double against the same Illinois College squad.
It was an otherwise tough shooting night for the Rams (2-2), held to a 32.3-percent clip for the game, including 3-of-26 from beyond the 3-point arc.
The Rams trailed by as many as 11 points in the second quarter, but hung around and sliced the deficit to 41-37 on a 3-pointer by freshman Kali March (FR/Littleton, Colo.) with 5:10 left in the third.
The Lady Blues (5-4) stretched the lead back to double-digits by the end of the third quarter and outscored the Rams 15-9 in the fourth.
Cornell got 11 points apiece from its backcourt tandem of March and Madison Osborn (SO/Alburnett, Iowa). Freshman Rachael Adewusi (FR/Warren, Mich.) had six points, four rebounds and four blocked shots. Newcomer Taeylor Reece (FR/San Tan Valley, Ariz.) provided a spark off the bench with eight rebounds.
Illinois College held a 50-34 advantage in rebounds, contributing to 17 second-chance points to Cornell's seven.
Lilly Pepper scored a game-high 18 points to pace the Lady Blues.
