GRINNELL – A successful men's tennis season ended for Cornell Saturday with a 9-0 loss to Grinnell in the Midwest Conference South Division Championship on the Pioneers' home courts.
No. 2 seed Cornell, which beat Monmouth 6-3 in Wednesday's division semifinal, concluded the campaign at 10-9 overall.
The young Rams featured three freshmen at the top of their lineup in Federico Polidori (FR/Miami Beach, Fla.), Alexander Hadler-Strumlauf (FR/La Jolla, Calif.) and Chris Penas-Hull (FR/Lincoln, Neb.).
Top-seeded Grinnell (8-0) stretched its dual winning streak to 163 against conference foes. The Pioneers advance to the MWC Championship against the North Division champion next weekend.
Hadler-Strumlauf finished an impressive rookie season as the MWC leader in singles wins, compiling a 14-5 record. He saved eight match points in the second set Saturday against Michael Conlin-Brandenburg before ultimately falling 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles.
Cornell No. 1 player Polidori lost 6-2, 6-1 to Bowen Mince. Penas-Hull dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 3. Drew Arnold (JR/Georgetown, Texas), Alejandro Colorado (JR/Antiguo Cuscatlan, El Salvador) and Bryce Fincher (SO/Lafayette, Colo.) were shut out in their respective singles matches.
Polidori and Hadler-Strumlauf came up short, 8-3, to Grinnell's No. 1 doubles pair of Mince and Leo Esztergomi.
Penas-Hull and Arnold at No. 2 and Colorado and Ravi Parekh (JR/Coralville, Iowa) at No. 3 both lost 8-0 in doubles play.
