INDIANOLA – Cornell's young men's soccer team has shown a knack for winning close matches early this season in nonconference play.
The Rams were at it again Monday night, extending their winning streak to four matches with a come-from-behind 2-1 overtime victory over Simpson at Buxton Stadium.
Cornell climbed to 4-1 overall with its third one-goal victory in eight days. It's the team's second overtime triumph during the span.
Freshman
George Archer netted the winner on an assist from
Galen Westervelt with 7:17 remaining in the first overtime period. It was Archer's third goal of the season, tying for the team lead.
Zach Miller gave the Rams a chance to win it, converting a penalty kick at the 78-minute mark that knotted the score at 1-1.
Simpson (2-3) put the first score on the board in the 39th minute and held the 1-0 lead deep into the second half. That goal was the first allowed by Cornell's stingy defense in four matches.
Freshman goalkeeper
Will Bickel, the reigning Midwest Conference Defensive Performer of the Week, recorded a season-high 10 saves in the complete-game effort.
Cornell's attack accounted for 18 shots, five coming from Miller. The Rams got two attempts each from
Cian McNamara, Westervelt, Archer and
Blake Soto.
Simpson finished with 21 shot attempts, 11 on goal.
The Rams head out of state Saturday for a 2 p.m. matchup with Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln, Neb.
