MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's women's tennis team claimed an early doubles win, although Coe took the dual and a Bremner Cup point in Wednesday's 8-1 victory on the Rams' home courts.
The Rams (3-7) hung with the rival Kohawks (7-1) after an 8-4 win from No. 2 doubles tandem
Makayla Johnson and
Ashley Mink. Cornell No. 1 doubles partners
Emmaline Fievet and
Amanda Dragon lost 8-2.
The Kohawks led 2-1 after doubles play, which included a default win at the No. 3 position.
Cornell dropped the four contested singles matches in straight sets and gave Coe default wins in two others. Johnson provided the most resistance in her bout at No. 2 singles, falling 6-3, 6-3.
Fievet (6-0, 6-0), Mink (6-0, 6-1) and Dragon (6-2, 6-2) all came up short in their respective matches.
The Rams now hold a 3-2 edge in the
2021-22 Bremner Cup All-Sports Series. The next competition against the Kohawks is a basketball doubleheader Nov. 8 in Mount Vernon.
Cornell resumes MWC play Oct. 9 with duals at Illinois College at 9 a.m. and Monmouth at 3 p.m.
