MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's bid for a Midwest Conference Women's Soccer Tournament berth will be decided on the final day of the regular season.
The Rams settled for a 1-1 draw with visiting Monmouth Wednesday, keeping Cornell (4-11-3 overall, 3-2-2 MWC) in fourth place in the MWC standings but with Lawrence (3-4 MWC) lurking only two points behind.
Cornell still controls its own destiny going into Saturday's home finale at 1:30 p.m. against third-place Beloit (7-4-2 overall, 5-2 MWC). The Rams can clinch a postseason berth with a win or tie, OR a Lawrence loss or tie at Monmouth (3-10-2 overall, 0-5-2 MWC).
Cornell's reigning MWC Offensive Performer of the Week
Elise Hermiston netted the initial goal of Wednesday's match in the 41st minute. Hermiston took a pass from
Sam O'Brien and looped a shot over the outstretched arms of Monmouth's goalkeeper, putting the Rams ahead 1-0 just before intermission.
It was Hermiston's third goal in the last two matches.
The Rams held onto the lead until the 73rd minute, when the Fighting Scots struck for the equalizer.
Cornell had scoring chances throughout, owning a 17-7 advantage in total shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Hermiston, O'Brien and
Sanne Croes attempted four shots apiece to pace Cornell's attack.
