JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Midwest Conference men's soccer champion will be settled on the final day of the regular season, with three teams squarely in the title picture.
Cornell slipped out of first place after a 3-1 loss to Illinois College Wednesday night at Green Athletic Field. The Rams (6-7-4 overall, 4-2-1 MWC) now stand second with 13 points, while Illinois College (9-4-3 overall, 4-1-2 MWC) inched ahead with 14 points and one match to go.
The No. 1 seed in the four-team MWC Tournament boils down to Saturday's final round of matches. The Rams play host to title contender Lake Forest (3-1-3 MWC, 12 points) at 1:30 p.m. on Senior Day.
Cornell can claim the league crown with a win AND an Illinois College loss or tie at Beloit (3-2-2 MWC, 11 points).
The Rams had posted three consecutive shutouts going into Wednesday's battle with Illinois College and the MWC's top scoring offense. Cornell gave up a tough-luck goal in the first half that caromed off the cross bar and put the Blueboys ahead 1-0.
Illinois College struck twice more during a four-minute span early in the second half, both off of corner kicks, that pushed the margin to 3-0.
Senior
Federico Polidori put Cornell on the scoreboard with his first collegiate goal in the 87th minute.
Gaurab Khadka assisted on the play, his third of the season.
The Rams totaled eight shots for the match, three from
Aidan Lerch.
Mason Parsley had two attempts.
Floris Huiskers finished with a pair of saves over 90 minutes. He faced 18 shots from the Blueboys.
