SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Cornell 174-pounder Jacob Sherzer kept his title hopes alive Friday as the Rams advanced six wrestlers to Day 2 at the Lower Midwest Region Championships inside the BOS Center.

The seventh-seeded Scherzer (17-7) scored a 19-1 technical fall in the first round and then knocked off North Central's No. 2 seed Joey Jens in the quarterfinals, 8-7. The fifth-year recorded a takedown with 20 seconds left to clinch his spot in Saturday's semifinals, where he'll face Coe's 11th-ranked LJ Richardson.

The Rams have five wrestlers going on the consolation side with freshman Jase Van Pelt at 125, sophomore Landon Card at 149, fifth-year Casey Allen at 165, sophomore Cael Mclaren at 184 and junior Treyten Steffen at 197. All are guaranteed top-eight finishes.

Action resumes at 11 a.m. Saturday with championship semifinal matches. All place matches start at 2:30 p.m.

The top three placewinners in each weight class qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships March 10-11 in Roanoke, Va.

Pelt earned a 3-1 sudden victory win over Ozark's Shelton Chastain and a 6-2 decision over Simpson's Dylan McChesney to continue on through his consolation bracket. He bounced back from a 2-0 opening loss against Cade Hornback of Coe.

Card won 2-1 over Central's Rob Areyano in the first round before dropping an 8-1 quarterfinal match 8-1 to Jacob Scropp of Loras. Undeterred, he pinned his next opponent Zach Casias of Schreiner in 4:48 to extend his season.

The No. 2 seed Allen went 3-1 after posting a preliminary win over Buena Vista's Max Mashek, 8-0, and a 5-0 decision win over Westminster's Jackson Beene. A 4-1 loss in the quarterfinal to Luther's Marcus Mandler sent Allen to the consolations, where he beat Emmanuel Zepeda of Nebraska Wesleyan, 6-5, to remain in the hunt for third place.

Both of McLaren's victories came by fall. He pinned Nawab Singh of Schreiner in 2:55 in the first round, and then decked Dubuque's Pilo Perez in 1:49 on the consolation side. McLaren lost 10-1 in the quarterfinals to Loras' Shane Liegel.

Steffen won 5-2 over Elijah Brockie of North Central (5-2) and lost 6-2 to Central's Gage Linahon in the quarterfinals. Steffen won a 7-6 decision over Luther's Garrett Kilgas after a reversal and riding time put him ahead in the consolation bout.

Evan Husko (133), Carter Fecht (141), Gabriel Smith (157) and Landen Schemmel (285) had their seasons end on Friday.
