PEORIA, Ill. – Cornell had its dual season come to an end in Friday's 5-0 semifinal loss to No. 2 seed Lake Forest in the semifinals of the Midwest Conference Men's Tennis Tournament at The Clubs at River City.
The third-seeded Rams, who entered the tournament on a four-dual winning streak, closed at 11-14 overall. Cornell took third in the MWC regular season with a 4-2 record, marking its highest finish since 2017.
The Foresters (11-8 overall) claimed their sixth consecutive dual win and advanced to the championship to face top-seeded Grinnell Friday afternoon. The champion earns the MWC's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Cornell's No. 1 doubles team of
Alexander Hadler-Strumlauf and
Federico Polidori played tough in an 8-6 loss. Cornell's tandem led the match 5-3 before the Foresters rallied late.
Zachary Ong and
Jackson Smock fell 8-1 at No. 2 doubles, while
August Krahn and
Edwin Holyoake dropped an 8-2 decision at No. 3.
In the two finished singles matches, Ong lost 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 and Holyoake fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.
The Rams now prepare for the MWC Individual Championships, contested Saturday and Sunday in Peoria, Ill. Cornell's players are seeded No. 3 in all six singles flights and the three doubles draws.
