DECORAH – Cornell's men's wrestling team turned in a strong 2-0 performance at Saturday's Luther Duals, stamped by a 27-15 victory over the host and 23rd-ranked Norse.
The 24-ranked Rams opened the day with a 35-3 rout of UW-Stevens Point. Cornell claimed the final three matches in the comeback victory over Luther.
Cornell (6-4) had five individuals finish 2-0 on the day in
Eli Sneed (133 pounds), 12th-ranked
Landon Card (149), fourth-ranked
Cael McLaren (184), 11th-ranked
Treyten Steffen (197) and 12th-ranked
Jackson Brinker (285).
The Rams won six of the 10 individual bouts against Luther, which led 15-14 through seven matches. McLaren pulled Cornell ahead with a 12-3 major decision at 184.
Steffen scored a 12-5 decision at 197, and Brinker put the dual away with a quick pin in 1:24 over Tashaud Nelson at heavyweight.
The Rams also received key bonus points from
Jase Van Pelt at 125 (pin in 2:59) and Card at 149 (20-3 technical fall).
Eli Sneed earned a 5-4 decision at 133.
Cornell dominated UW-Stevens Point with nine match wins, highlighted by a pin from 157-pounder
AJ Parrish in 1:22. The Rams won by technical fall at 125 (
Jayson Stevens, 15-0) and 149 (Card, 19-2). McLaren also tallied a bonus point with a 13-4 major decision at 184.
Brian Petry outlasted Josh Heuss, 3-2 in double overtime, at 165. Sneed rolled to a 10-3 win, while Steffen (6-3) and Brinker (10-4) also won by decision.
Coming up – The Rams wrestle at the Gator Boots Duals next Saturday, Dec. 21 in Nashville, Tenn. Cornell will face Mount Union at 9:45 a.m., Huntingdon at 11:30 a.m. and Ozarks at 1:15 p.m.
