MOUNT VERNON – Freshman
Reagan Wells poured in a collegiate-high 21 points and first-year teammate
Erin Knowles notched a huge double-double as Cornell's women's basketball team stayed unbeaten in the Midwest Conference with a 60-48 victory Saturday inside the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.
The rising Rams (5-3 overall) earned their fourth consecutive win and improved to 2-0 in MWC play. Cornell recorded its seventh straight series victory over the Foresters (2-6 overall, 1-1 MWC).
Cornell led for all but two minutes of the contest thanks to a hot start by Wells, who netted 15 of her points in the first half. The 5-foot-11 guard finished her best offensive day as a Ram with three 3-pointers while going 6-of-6 from the foul line.
The Foresters also had no answer for Knowles, who accumulated 17 points and 16 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Knowles, the top scorer in the MWC (19.4 ppg), shot 5-of-11 from the field and dished three assists.
A'ryn Jackson came off the bench and canned three 3-point goals. She finished with nine points.
Heidi Jorgensen added six rebounds.
Cornell's top-ranked scoring defense in the MWC limited the Foresters to 25.9-percent shooting. Lake Forest's Rebecca Christodoulou, who came in at 19.4 points per game, was held to seven points on 2-of-16 shooting.
Lake Forest was within striking distance late, down 49-44 with 3:03 left in regulation. The Rams answered with a 3-pointer by Jackson and finished the game on an 11-4 run.
Coming up – The Rams are back home Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. contest against in-state rival Grinnell (7-3 overall, 1-1 MWC).
