CEDAR RAPIDS – Cornell's
Gabriel Smith and
Cael McLaren both earned bonus-point wins, although No. 5 nationally-ranked Coe took Friday's Bremner Cup wrestling dual, 30-14, at Kohawk Arena.
The Rams won three matches over their long-time rival, highlighted by a first-period pin from 14th-ranked McLaren over No. 11 Jared Voss at 184 pounds. McLaren (16-8) overcame an early 3-0 deficit and put Voss on his back for a fall in 3:00.
The 15th-ranked Smith (21-7) had his way with Dylan Falck, recording eight takedowns in a 26-10 technical fall at 157. Smith ended the match in 6:05 and brought Cornell within 13-8 at the halfway point of the dual.
Cornell also received a victory from junior 149-pounder
Landon Card (18-7), who scored a 4-1 decision over Ty Koedam for the Rams' first points of the meet.
The Rams (5-10) dropped two tight matches to finish the night. In a nationally-ranked battle at 197, Coe's No. 7 Mathieu Arsenault needed a third-period takedown to get past No. 13
Treyten Steffen, 7-5. Steffen moved his season record to 20-6.
At heavyweight, Cornell's
Jackson Brinker (23-10) was edged 4-2 by Wyatt Smith. Cornell 125-pounder
Jase Van Pelt went the distance with 10th-ranked Cade Hornback in a 4-0 loss.
The Kohawks (11-2) tallied technical falls at 133 (Bryce Parke 17-2 over
Eli Sneed), 141 (Dresden Grimm 20-4 over
Jacob Redington) and 174 (No. 8 LJ Richardson 17-2 over
Brian Petry). Coe's ninth-ranked Will Esmoil pinned
Scotty Scheidecker in 4:13 at 165.
With the dual win, Coe clinched the
2023-24 Bremner Cup All-Sports Series, leading 8-2 with five head-to-head competitions remaining this spring.
Coming up – The Rams wrestle Augustana in their final home dual of the season Feb. 20 on Senior Night. The meet starts at 7 p.m. in the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.
