LAKE FOREST, Ill. – There was no shortage of offense in Thursday's softball doubleheader between Midwest Conference unbeatens, which went in favor of Lake Forest – 13-5 and 22-12, both in five innings – at Mohr Field.
The Rams (8-9 overall, 2-2 MWC) accounted for 14 hits in the Game 2 slugfest, which marked the most runs Lake Forest (13-9 overall, 4-0 MWC) has allowed in a game this season.
Cornell exploded for nine runs in the second inning and sent 15 batters to plate in building an early 10-1 lead. The Foresters, who had 19 hits in the game, came back to tie it at 10-10 in the third and tacked on 12 more runs in their final two at-bats.
Junior
Lilly Dierkes led Cornell's lineup, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs.
Peyton Souhrada tallied three hits, two runs and two RBIs.
Caitlin Babcock and
Elise Oleson drove in two runs apiece.
All nine of Cornell's starters registered a hit in the second game.
The Rams scored first in Game 1, but the Foresters quickly retaliated and built an 11-1 cushion through three innings. Cornell plated four runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run double from
Katie DelCorso.
Oleson also had a double for the Rams, who were outhit 15-3.
Izzy Gullixon and
Kaylynn Sparks each had one RBI.
Coming up – Cornell plays host to Lawrence (8-12 overall, 0-2 MWC) for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Van Metre Family Softball Field.
