MOUNT VERNON – Cornell ran into a hot-hitting Grinnell team Saturday, falling 13-1 and 11-3 in Midwest Conference action at Van Metre Family Softball Field.
The Rams (13-16 overall, 7-5 MWC) remained a solid fourth place in the league race, two games ahead of fifth-place Lawrence with four contests to go.
Sunday's scheduled doubleheader at Monmouth (6-28 overall, 4-7 MWC) has been postponed due to inclement weather. A makeup date has not yet been set.
Grinnell (21-13 overall, 10-2 MWC) totaled 30 hits in the doubleheader and moved into a tie for second place.
Cornell sophomore
Peyton Souhrada had a productive day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, two walks and one RBI. In the opener, she registered her ninth multi-hit of the season and scored the team's lone run.
Grinnell built an early 6-0 lead in Game 1 and then finished it with a five-run fifth frame. Leadoff hitter
Katie DelCorso went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Rams.
The Rams stayed within striking distance through four innings in Game 2. Souhrada singled home
Mary Puffett and cut the margin to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
Grinnell answered with six runs on six hits in the top of the fifth to regain control.
Lilly Dierkes and
Kaylynn Sparks each had one RBI for the Rams.
Addie Bowman doubled.
