CEDAR RAPIDS – The Rams were in an uphill battle after yielding two early goals and couldn't quite make up the difference in a 2-1 women's soccer loss to Coe Wednesday night at Clark Field.
Down 2-0 less than five minutes into the contest, Cornell settled in and trimmed the deficit to 2-1 on a penalty kick from
Eva Plathe at the 58-minute mark. It was the eighth goal this fall for Cornell's first-year playmaker.
The Rams (1-5) had two corner kick chances in the final five minutes, although couldn't net the equalizer as the Kohawks (1-5-1) held on to earn a point in the
2024-25 Bremner Cup All-Sports Series, which they now lead 3-0.
Men's soccer is the next head-to-head competition between the Linn County rivals Oct. 2 in Mount Vernon.
Cornell outshot the home team, 10-9, and held a 10-5 advantage in corner kick attempts. First-year
Alicia Lopez fired four shots to pace the Rams, followed by three from Plathe.
Newcomer
Adde Sawyer worked all 90 minutes at keeper for Cornell. She finished with two saves.
Coe struck for its initial goal only 34 seconds into the match. The Kohawks made it 2-0 at the 4:11 mark.
Coming up – The Rams travel to play Augustana at 1 p.m. Saturday in Rock Island, Ill.
