ST. PAUL, Minn. – Cornell's volleyball team notched its second Top-25 win of the season at the ultra-competitive KTIS Classic hosted by the University of Northwestern.
The No. 22 Rams finished 1-2 against three nationally-ranked opponents, highlighted by Saturday's 20-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 comeback against No. 20 Berry (Ga.).
In a rematch of last year's five-set NCAA regional semifinal, the Rams dropped a 25-21, 25-21, 25-12 decision to No. 12 Northwestern on Friday. Saturday's finale saw Cornell fall in four sets to No. 7 UW-Whitewater (25-20, 25-27, 25-15, 25-22).
Now 2-2 against nationally-rated foes, Cornell moved to 4-3 on the season.
Fifth-year hitter
Ilah Perez-Johnson continued her stellar start to the campaign and was named to the All-Tournament Team. This is her second all-tournament honor in as many weeks.
Perez-Johnson posted two double-doubles and 47 total kills in three matches. She slammed a season-high 21 kills in the win over Berry.
The Rams registered 13 blocks against Berry, led by
Ally Olmstead with eight assisted stuffs.
Clare Green tallied 33 assists and 13 digs.
Ella Becker had a match-high 24 digs, while
Kensie Staats added 19.
Carly Puffer provided nine kills and five blocks.
Cornell was limited to a .030 attack percentage in the Northwestern match. Green and
Nia Howard combined for 26 assists, nine going to Perez-Johnson. The Rams had eight ace serves.
Perez-Johnson delivered 17 kills, 10 digs and two aces against undefeated UW-Whitewater (6-0).
Kiana Manson and Puffer added eight kills apiece.
Green dished 37 assists and Becker led the team with 18 digs.
Coming up – Cornell travels to play rival Coe in a 7:30 p.m. Bremner Cup match Wednesday in Cedar Rapids.
