Cornell sweeps MWC foes on the road, clinches post-season berth

Ill. –  The Cornell women's tennis team earned two sweeps, defeating the Illinois College Lady Blues (9-7, 1-2 MWC) and the Monmouth Scots (0-9, 0-4 MWC), to go 7-0 for the day. With the two wins today, Cornell clinches a berth in the MWC four-team tournament in May.

The Rams are now 4-0 in the MWC, and improve to 10-1 overall for the season. 

The team started with a sweep in doubles against the Lady Blues, from pairs of sophomore Michaela Clark and junior Mac Graves, junior Tansy Graves and sophomore Annika Dox, and senior Audrey Small and sophomore Jenna Benkufsky. Against the Scots, Dox and Small secured a quick win at No. 2 doubles, 6-1. Junior Isabella Wallin and Benkufsky came back from a 4-0 deficit at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for the Rams, 7-5. The Graves sisters fell at No. 1, 6-4.

The Rams finished against Illinois College with 5 straight set wins, and 3 set tiebreaks won. Dox pulled out a 4-6, 6-2, 10-1 at No. 5, and Small clinched at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-1 scoreline.

Against the Scots, the Rams continued with 6 straight set wins, with 6-1, 6-2 scorelines from Clark and Tansy Graves, Small finishing the day with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4, Dox finishing 6-1, 6-3, and Benkufsky winning at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1. Mac Graves won at No. 2, 7-6 (2), 6-4.

Small, Benkufsky and Dox all enjoyed a 4-0 day in matches over the course of the 2 meets. 

Tansy Graves reached her 90th career victory with her three wins today. 

Coming up – The Rams will play at home on both Saturday and Sunday, starting with Lake Forest, and finishing with Grinnell. First serve is set for 3 PM on Oct. 12.
