Rams finish strong for 62-48 win in Cornell Classic opener

MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's women's basketball team pulled away late to claim a 62-48 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan in Saturday's Cornell Classic opener inside the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.

The Rams (2-1) earned their second win in four days, riding a 44.7-percent shooting performance to knock off Nebraska Wesleyan (1-2) for the first time in series history. 

Cornell held a 45-44 advantage after three quarters, then stifled the Prairie Wolves to just four points in the fourth period. Junior Heidi Jorgensen recorded 10 of her 15 points in the final period, pouring in three triples to secure the Cornell victory. 

Sophomore forward Erin Knowles narrowly missed a double-double, tallying 18 points and nine rebounds. Knowles distributed four assists and had a career-high four blocked shots. 

Jorgensen grabbed six rebounds and drained four 3-pointers. Caroline Kron had a strong evening with 10 points and a game-high six assists. Maggie Thompson snared six boards.

Coach Brent Brase's stingy defense forced 16  turnovers, with Cornell swiping 10 steals. The visiting Prairie Wolves were limited to 31.6-percent shooting, including a chilly 2-of-12 in the fourth quarter.

Cornell commanded the glass, 40-28. The Rams assisted on 15-of-21 made field goals, and went 13-of-16 from the free throw line. Cornell outscored Nebraska Wesleyan, 16-2, off the bench. 

Up next The Rams conclude the Cornell Classic against Dubuque (2-1) Sunday at 3 p.m. Dubuque fell 75-42 to St. Benedict Saturday evening.
