DECORAH – A quick turnaround resulted in a weekend sweep for Cornell's women's basketball team, which pulled off a 73-68 road win over Luther Saturday afternoon at Birkestrand Family Court.
Back on the court 18 hours after Friday's 81-38 home rout of Marian, the Rams (5-4) handled the short rest in stride with a strong offensive effort against Luther (5-4).
Erin Knowles poured in a game-high 25 points,
Heidi Jorgensen netted 18, and first-year
Darby Haley did not miss a shot in recording a collegiate-best 13 points off Cornell's bench. The Rams shot 44.9 percent from the field and sank 20 free throws – both season highs – in a game they led for all but four minutes.
Knowles hit 8-of-14 field goals and corralled a team-best seven rebounds. Jorgensen tied her career scoring high with help from four 3-pointers. Haley enjoyed a perfect shooting game, going 3-of-3 from 3-point land and 4-of-4 from the foul line.
Knowles' bucket in the paint gave Cornell its biggest lead at 63-51 with 4:52 left in regulation. Luther sliced the margin to 69-65 before Knowles sealed it on two free throws with 19 seconds remaining.
Kallynn Stroup finished with nine points and five rebounds for the Rams, who handed Luther its first home loss of the season.
Coming up – Cornell travels to play Eureka (0-7) at 2 p.m. Thursday in Eureka, Ill.
