MOUNT VERNON – Junior
Peyton Souhrada recorded her 100th career hit and
Brianna Risley homered in extra innings, although the Rams couldn't hold on in a 6-5 Game 2 nine-inning softball loss at Loras Saturday afternoon.
The Duhawks (14-8) rolled to a 13-1 win in five innings in the opener.
Cornell (8-9) regrouped from the Game 1 loss and was in position to earn a split late in Game 2. Souhrada drove in
Linnea Drever for an unearned run in the top of the ninth and then Risley belted a one-out solo home run that put the Rams ahead 6-4.
With the international tiebreaker in effect – placing a runner on second base to start the bottom of the ninth – Loras quickly tied the score at 6-6 on a triple and sacrifice fly. The Duhawks won it on a two-out single to center field that was misplayed.
Souhrada registered her 100th hit in her 88th game as a Ram. She reached the milestone with a single to right field in the second inning of Game 2.
Elise Oleson singled, doubled and scored a run to lead Cornell's seven-hit attack. Risley's homer was her second of the season.
Cornell's
Hannah Rhoades (4-2) went the distance in the pitching circle, allowing five earned runs over 8.2 innings. She struck out four and walked none.
The Rams were limited to singles by
Kloi Barney and
Alexa Corona in the five-inning opener, which saw Loras take control early with a 10-run first frame.
The Duhawks totaled 13 hits, including three homers.
Coming up – Cornell is on the road Monday to face Buena Vista for a 3 p.m. doubleheader in Storm Lake.
