Rams sweep Monmouth at Van Metre Family Softball Field

MOUNT VERNON – The Cornell softball team faced Monmonth Sunday in a conference doubleheader at Van Metre Family Softball Field. The Rams kept their conference tournament hopes alive with a sweep, winning game one 5-1 and taking game two 9-6.
 
The Rams used a big sixth inning to secure game one win.  The score was 0-0 heading into the sixth with Monmouth (6-30, 2-12 MWC) scoring in the top half to go up 1-0. Cornell (14-19, 6-8 MWC) answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning, then held Monmouth scoreless in the seventh to win.
 
Lexi Ellermeier went the distance for the Rams in game one, to pick up the win. Ellermeier allowed only five hits, gave up one earned run and had three strikeouts. 
 
Cornell had was led on offense by Alexa Corona, Kloi Barney and Brooke Furman each having two hits.  Brianna Risley knocked in two runs with a double in the sixth inning.
 
In game two Cornell found themselves down 5-1 heading to the bottom of the third.  Rams put four runs on the board in the third and three in the fifth to take control of the game.
 
The Rams were led by Peyton Souhrada and Alexa Corona each going 3-of-4 at the place. Corona scored twice for Cornell. Lilly Dierkes, Souhrada, Linnea Drever and Brooke Furman all doubled in the win.
 
Daelynn Rhoades came on in relief in the top of the third, and picked up the win.  Rhoades surrendered two runs on five hits, striking out three Fighting Scots over 5.2 innings.
 
Coming up – The Rams finish out the regular season next weekend.  They take on Knox in a conference doubleheader on Saturday, and face non-conference opponent Simpson on Sunday.  Both game ones start at 1:00 p.m. at Van Metre Family Softball Field.
