Rams fall twice to defending MWC champion Lake Forest

MOUNT VERNON – Sunday's matchup between Midwest Conference unbeatens tilted in the favor of defending league champion Lake Forest at Van Metre Family Softball Field.

The Foresters (12-10 overall, 4-0 MWC) showcased their power and speed in an 11-4, 12-3 sweep, stretching their winning streak to 30 games in MWC regular-season play.

Cornell moved to 10-11 overall, 2-2 in the league.

First-year leadoff hitter Alexa Corona went 3-for-4 with an RBI to pace Cornell in the opener, which saw the Foresters jump ahead 8-0 through two innings. The Rams pulled within 9-4 after a four-run fourth frame, but would not draw any closer.

Corrin Kennedy and Peyton Souhrada both doubled and finished with two hits apiece.

Souhrada carried her hot bat into Game 2, going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs. She raised her hefty season batting average to .483.

First-year Kloi Barney registered two hits, including a solo home run in Cornell's final at-bat in the fifth.

Lake Forest took control with four runs in the second, fueled by a three-run homer from Cadence Dempsey. It was the third home run of the day for Dempsey, who had 10 RBIs in the doubleheader.

The Foresters recorded 13 stolen bases in the nightcap and limited Cornell's potent lineup to six hits.

Coming up – The Rams step outside the conference Thursday for a 2 p.m. home doubleheader against No. 20 nationally-ranked Central (9-3).
