Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Jack Carlson

Knowles' record-setting night leads Rams to 69-63 road win

GALESBURG, Ill. — Sophomore Erin Knowles finished one point shy of her career high and Cornell's women's basketball team snatched a key Midwest Conference road victory, 69-63, over Knox Tuesday evening inside Memorial Gymnasium.

The MWC's second-leading scorer, Knowles tossed in 34 points on 9-of-16 shooting, and established new Cornell single-game records in free throws made (16) and free throws attempts (23).

Knowles broke her own record of 13 free throw makes set earlier this season. She shattered the long-standing mark for free throw attempts, which was 15 by Lisa Fry in 2002.

Coach Brent Brase's defensive-minded Rams (9-5 overall, 3-3 MWC) earned their sixth win in seven games, forcing high-flying Knox (5-9, 4-2 MWC) into 21 turnovers. Cornell held Knox 12 points below its season average.

Cornell moved into fifth place in the MWC standings, one game behind a 4-2 second-place bunch of Lawrence, Grinnell, and Knox.

First-year Kallynn Stroup notched 11 points, a team-high seven boards, and four assists. Darby Haley added eight points. Heidi Jorgensen and Caroline Kron chipped in six points apiece.

Cornell shot 41.7 percent from the floor. The Rams converted 23-of-35 free throws.
The whistle-filled contest featured 45 fouls and 62 free throw attempts between the two teams.

Up next — Cornell returns to Mount Vernon Wednesday, Jan. 21 to host Illinois College (7-8, 3-3 MWC). Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
