ST. PETER, Minn. – Cornell College men's tennis wrapped up their fall competition at the ITA Midwest Regional this weekend, highlighted by a doubles consolation championship from senior Trent Devore and freshman Trace Turner.
Devore and Turner rebounded from an opening-round loss in the ITA Midwest Regional doubles draw to run through a trio of wins in the consolation bracket. The Cornell duo opened with an 8-5 quarterfinal victory over Charlie Harlin and Alexander Hardin of the University of Dubuque before cruising past Justin Hutchcroft and Ryan Casey of Edgewood, 8-1, in the semifinals.
Devore and Turner completed their run with an 8-7 (7-1) victory over Thomas Trujilo and Robert Matera of Wartburg in the consolation championship match.
Cornell also enjoyed a strong doubles run from sophomore Jack Saunders and freshman Braeden Holmes in the Midwest Open doubles draw. The duo defeated Macalester's Zachary Regelman and Sebastian Diaz, 8-5, in the opening round before earning an 8-6 win over St. Olaf's Ryan Birnesser and Cathal Mee in the round of 32. Saunders and Holmes advanced to the round of 16 before falling to Gustavus Adolphus' Ethan Beal and Eli Olson, 8-5.
In singles, Devore earned a first-round victory in the ITA Midwest Regional, defeating Wisconsin-Whitewater's Seth Smigel, 6-4, 2-6, 10-4, before falling to Coe's Josh Tiemann, 6-1, 6-1, in the round of 64.
Saunders picked up a Midwest Open singles win, defeating MSOE's Carlos Lopez, 6-3, 0-6, 10-8, while Turner narrowly fell to MSOE's Pedro Mendes, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 10-7. Henry Lambley also battled in a 6-4, 7-6 (7-6) loss to St. Scholastica's Mathais Llantoy.
Saunders advanced to the round of 32 before dropping a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Grinnell's Tavin Lee.
Cornell finished the event strong in the half court with a 5-3 record overall. Devore wrapped up his final regional tournament with a 4-2 record overall. Saunders captured three wins to his name as well.
