Rams edged 62-55 by Knox in matchup of MWC contenders

MOUNT VERNON – Cold shooting hampered Cornell's women's basketball team in a foul-ridden 62-55 Midwest Conference loss to Knox Wednesday evening inside the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.

The Rams (13-6 overall, 7-4 MWC) fell for the first time in almost a month, their season-best six-game winning streak snapped by high-powered Knox (10-10, 8-3 MWC).

In a game that featured 42 fouls and 56 free throws, Cornell grabbed the early momentum and led by a point at halftime, 27-26. Knox struck first in the third quarter on a Bria Medina layup, and never surrendered the lead again.

The Rams hung tough despite 25.8-percent shooting, even pulling within 58-55 with 20 seconds remaining on two Heidi Jorgensen free throws. After Knox split its two foul shots, Caroline Kron's layup rimmed out and the Prairie Fire were able to close it out.

Sophomore Erin Knowles earned her 11th career double-double and second consecutive with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Jorgensen tossed in 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting with three rebounds and two assists. Kallynn Stroup swiped five steals. Darby Haley added three assists and two steals off the bench.

Cornell shot 4-of-28 from three in the game. Knox outrebounded Cornell, 51-40. The Rams forced 21 Knox turnovers.

Knox avenged a 69-63 loss to Cornell in Galesburg, Ill., from earlier in the season.

Up next – Cornell faces second-place Lawrence (15-5 overall, 8-3 MWC) Saturday in Mount Vernon. Tipoff is 3 p.m.
