MOUNT VERNON - Cornell's men's tennis team returned to their home courts hosting the first outdoor dual matches of the spring season on Saturday. The Rams split a pair of matches, dropping the morning match 5-2 to Bethany Lutheran College, before bouncing back for a 7-0 sweep of the University of Dubuque.
The Rams (10-8) opened up the day strong against the visiting Vikings. No. 1 pair of
Trent Devore and
Jack Saunders came away with a 6-3 win, while the freshmen duo of
Matthew Oshiro and
Gavin Collyott clinched the doubles point at No. 3 winning 6-4.
Singles proved to be a tightly contested battle with three matches going the distance to super tiebreakers. Zachary Ong was the lone singles win for the Rams earning a 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 win at No. 3. Saunders at No. 2 and Drew Campbell at No. 4 both narrowly fell in super tiebreakers. Devore dropped a 7-6 7-6 decision at the top spot.
In the afternoon, Cornell bounced back in a big way sweeping the Spartans from Dubuque 7-0. The Rams won all three doubles matches to claim their second doubles point on the day.
Cornell picked up straight set singles wins by Ong, Campbell, Oshiro, Collyott and Sam Cumicek at the No. 2 - No. 6 positions respectively. Devore finished out his match 6-1, 3-6, 10-3 to complete the sweep.
Coming up - The Rams travel to Waverly, IA to take on Wartburg College on Saturday March 28th.
