INDIANOLA – Cornell's softball team had a late lead get away against No. 13 nationally-ranked Simpson in Thursday's 10-5 Game 2 loss on the road.
The Storm won the opener, 13-5, in five innings and raised their season record to 17-2 with the doubleheader sweep.
The Rams (9-5) battled the American Rivers Conference preseason favorite in the nightcap, leading 3-0 through four innings and 5-3 after five.
Simpson turned the tide during a seven-run sixth frame with five hits and help from two walks, one hit batsman and three Cornell errors.
Cornell's hot-swinging
Linnea Drever delivered a two-out, two-run single that put the Rams ahead 3-0 in the fourth. The junior reached base safely for the 14th consecutive game this season. Drever boosted her batting average to .559, best in the Midwest Conference.
Elise Oleson had an RBI single in the top of the fifth that pushed the Rams ahead 5-0.
All nine Cornell starters registered a hit in Game 2.
Brooke Furman went 2-for-4, while
Peyton Souhrada scored twice.
In Game 1, Simpson unloaded for 15 total hits, seven for extra bases. The Storm built an early 12-1 lead, fueled by a seven-run second inning.
Oleson doubled, singled and drove in a run. Drever tallied an RBI double in her lone official at-bat. Leadoff hitter
Alexa Corona went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Souhrada also had an RBI for the Rams.
