MOUNT VERNON – The Rams faced the hot bats of Lake Forest to start conference play Saturday at Van Metre Family Softball Field. Lake Forest (11-7, 3-1 MWC) had five players combined for six home runs as they swept Cornell, 11-3 (5 inn.) and 9-4.
Cornell (12-8, 0-2 MWC) fell behind 6-0 in game two before
Monet Roelle singled to left field in the bottom of the third.
Ella Cooper entered the game to pinch run for Roelle,
Brooke Furman advanced Cooper to second on a single.
Ella Cooper then scored on a fielder's choice from
Corrin Kennedy and a throwing error by the shortstop.
The Rams picked up one run in the sixth, when Kennedy doubled to start the inning and
Linnea Drever singled to left field to bring in Kennedy. Drever's hit extended her on base streak to 20 games.
Cornell added two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning when
Lauren Summers singled to center field, and Roelle homered off the score board to bring in Summers.
The Rams had 10 hits with
Alexa Corona,
Peyton Souhrada (including a double) and Roelle's leading the way with two apiece. Summers, Furman, Kennedy and Drever each had one.
In game one Cornell managed six hits, with Furman and Kennedy leading the way with two hits each.
Brianna Risley and Drever each had one. Summers had an RBI and Corona, Kennedy and Drever each scored a run.
Coming up – Rams face Grinnell (6-16, 1-3 MWC) in a doubleheader on Wednesday at Van Metre Family Softball Field. First game starts at 3:00 pm.
