PELLA, Iowa – The Cornell College men's tennis team competed at the Central Invitational on Saturday at Central College and Pella High School, earning several victories across singles and doubles competition. The event featured seven schools in Cornell, Central, Grinnell, Missouri Valley, Missouri Baptist, Grand View and Maharishi.
In singles play, the Rams were led by Braeden Holmes, Jack Saunders, Gavin Collyott, Trace Turner, MIlls Arnold and Matthew Oshiro, who each recorded at least one victory.
Holmes opened Flight A with a convincing 6-3, 6-0 victory over Central's Alex Slaymaker, while Saunders defeated Central's Paco Molina, 6-4, 6-3.
Collyott picked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Central's Brody Ferrell in Flight B. Turner bounced back from his opening-round loss with a 6-2 victory over Millikin's Daniel Blaojevic, who retired during the match. Arnold also responded with a strong second-round performance, defeating Ferrell, 6-2, 6-3.
Oshiro turned in one of Cornell's strongest performances of the day in Flight C. He opened with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Central's Donovan Klish before defeating Central's Adam Boone, 6-2, 6-3, to advance through two rounds.
The Rams also collected two doubles victories. Turner and Trent Devore defeated Central's E. Alvarez Chedzoy and Gavin Jablonski, 6-3, in Flight A. Collyott and Oshiro posted a 6-1 win over Central's Brody Ferrell and Aaron Meinders in Flight B.
Coming up: The Rams will host Maharishi at home on September 26th at 1:30pm in a scrimmage.
