Cornell drops Vikings on the road for first MWC victory

APPLETON, Wis. — The Cornell College women's tennis team turned in a dominant performance Sunday, cruising to a 6-1 victory over Lawrence University on the road. The Rams improve to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in MWC play. 

Cornell set the tone from the opening point, sweeping all three doubles matches to take the doubles point heading into singles play.

At No. 1 doubles, Mac Graves and Michaela Clark teamed up for a commanding 6-0 victory over Clara Hills and Logan Kane. Annika Dox and Emmie Kinder followed with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles, while Tansy Graves and Jenna Benkufsky completed the doubles sweep with a 6-0 triumph at No. 3.

Cornell carried that momentum into singles, winning five of six matches.

Clark continued her strong day at No. 1 singles, dispatching Hills 6-2, 6-1. Mac Graves added another straight-set victory at No. 2, defeating Kane 6-3, 6-0, while Tansy Graves blanked Tess McGlenn 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.

At No. 4, Kinder posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Sky Shinohara, while the final match of the day featured a comeback from Cornell's Isabella Wallin at No. 6 singles. After dropping the opening set 6-0, Wallin battled back to take the second set in a tiebreak before prevailing 0-6, 7-6(4), 10-3 in the match tiebreak.

Lawrence earned its lone point at No. 5 singles, where Kortney Travis fell 6-4, 6-3 to Arisa McCullough.

Coming up: The Rams continue MWC action hosting a trio of matches next weekend, beginning with Luther College at 9am on Saturday September 19th.
