MOUNT VERNON, IA – The Cornell College women's tennis team battled #25 Grinnell College on Sunday afternoon at the Cornell Tennis Courts, with the visiting Pioneers earning a 6-1 Midwest Conference victory.
Cornell (7-3, 3-2 MWC) opened the match with a win at No. 1 doubles, as Mac Graves and Michaela Clark defeated Grinnell's Pari Chavan and Kayla Surpless, 6-4. The Pioneers answered with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the doubles point heading into singles play.
Clark put together a strong battle at No. 1 singles, splitting the first two sets with Chavan before the Grinnell player secured the match in a 10-8 third-set tiebreaker. Clark secured the second set 7-6 (7-3) after dropping the first-set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4).
Emmie Kinder provided Cornell's lone singles victory at No. 3, overcoming Grinnell's Eliana Martin in a three-set battle. Kinder dropped the opening set 7-5 before responding with a 6-4 second-set win and a 10-3 third-set tiebreaker victory.
Grinnell also collected straight-set wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles. At No. 5, Annika Dox took the opening set 6-4 before Grinnell's Luiza Kohn won the second set 6-0 and the deciding tiebreaker 10-5.
