Mark Dutro

Dutro, head coach of four sports at Cornell in the 1990s, began his second stint with the Rams as assistant men’s and women’s track & field coach in the 2021-22 season. He serves as jumps and hurdles coach.

Dutro, who carries 30 years of coaching experience, was involved with Cornell’s cross country and track & field programs from 1993-2000. He was head coach for women’s track & field (1994-2000) and men’s track & field (1998-2000), and also headed both cross country teams (women, 1995-99; men, 1997-99).

Dutro was head coach of all four programs for three seasons, when the Rams transitioned into the Iowa Conference (currently the American Rivers Conference).

“Cornell is where my coaching career kicked off,” said Dutro. “One of the enticing things, coming back here to being a Ram, is I can finish where I started. Cornell provided one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I remember the athletics department as a family, part of something bigger than yourself. It’s nice to come full circle.”

The Rams claimed six individual conference champions in women’s track & field under Dutro’s guidance. Kate Proctor was a four-time champion in the triple jump. Discus thrower Kelly Dodd was an all-American in 1999.

Dutro was jumps and sprinters coach at Coe for three seasons (2019-21). He assisted with Mount Vernon High School’s cross country and track & field teams for three years.

Dutro was at NCAA Division II Fort Lewis (Colo.) College from 2001-16 as senior lecturer in the exercise science department. He headed Fort Lewis’ cross country and track & field programs for five years. Dutro was also head cross country and track & field coach at Durango High School for 10 years during his stay in Colorado.

Dutro coached at Iowa City West High School from 1991-93.

Dutro earned his bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University in 1982. He received a teaching degree from Wichita State University in 1988 and earned a master’s from the University of Iowa in 1993.
