MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's women's soccer team climbed into sole possession of second place in the Midwest Conference race with a 4-0 victory over visiting Illinois College Sunday afternoon.
The Rams (7-4-1 overall, 3-0-1 MWC) extended their impressive unbeaten streak to six matches. They are only three points behind league leader Knox (4-0-1 MWC) with five MWC contests remaining.
Sam O'Brien (SO/Evergreen, Colo.) scored the opening goal from a pass by Avery Wyse (JR/Arvada, Colo.) 21:42 into the game. Just under four minutes later, the Rams doubled their lead when Sofia Schnur (SR/Redwood City, Calif.) found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.
Ten minutes before halftime, Ashley Quesada (SR/Blaine, Wash.) scored the third goal for the Rams from a free kick once again. The goal was her team-leading sixth of the season.
Georgia James (SO/Rock City, Ill.) scored the final goal for Cornell with 20 minutes remaining in the contest. Schnur assisted the goal for her team-leading fifth assist on the year.
Cornell dominated the game, outshooting Illinois College (5-9-0 overall, 0-5-0 MWC) 30-6. Schur led the Rams with eight shots in the match. Maddalin Doran (FR/Maple Grove, Minn.) and James attempted five shots.
O'Brien took four shots on the day. Avery Wyse attempted two shots. Layne Pullen (JR/Vail, Ariz.), Sydney Hancox (FR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Dajana Scott-Smith (JR/Aurora, Colo.), Renee Wuest (JR/Minneapolis, Minn.), Emma Daugherty (SO/Herriman, Utah), and Quesada had one shot apiece.
Elise Thomason-Larsen (SO/Superior, Colo.) started the game for the Rams, she made one save. Nicole Trenholm (SO/Plainfield, Ill.) played the second half in goal and made three saves keeping the shutout. This was the fifth shutout of the season for Cornell and third in the last four matches.
