MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's men's soccer team recorded their first conference victory of the season beating Illinois College 1-0 on Sunday.
Blake Soto (FR/Oak Park, Ill.) scored the lone goal in the game at the 41:33 mark in the first half to give the Rams (3-8-3 overall, 1-2-2 MWC) the win. Soto volleyed the ball past the keeper from just outside the 18-yard box.
Cornell outshot Illinois College (5-9-2 overall, 1-4-0 MWC)) 17-4 in the game. Facundo Benavidez (SR/Buenos Aires, Argentina) led the Rams with five shots for the game. Andrew Lopez (FR/Aurora, Colo.) attempted three shots and Tyler Davis (JR/St. Andrews, Jamaica) had two. Jari Gottgens (FR/Nootdorp, Netherlands), Enzo Vanzillotta (SR/Porto Alegre, Brazil), Sam Duff (JR/Fort Collins, Colo.), Maxwell Ishmael (SR/Ossining, N.Y.), Justin Howe, Galen Westervelt (FR/Lopez Island, Wash.) and Soto all had one shot attempt in the game.
Cornell held a 6-0 advantage on corner kicks for the match as well.
Tom Gallagher (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) started the game in goal for the Rams. He played all 90 minutes and made one save.
Coming up – The Rams host Lawrence University (7-4-1 overall, 4-1-0 MWC), who are tied for second in the conference, Saturday at 1:30 p.m. for Senior Day.
