STORM LAKE – Cornell's men's soccer team used a big second half to beat Buena Vista University 4-0 Wednesday night on the road.
Facundo Benavidez (SR/Buenos Aires, Argentina) scored the opening goal from the penalty spot seven minutes into the second half and the Rams (2-7-1 overall, 0-2-0 MWC) never looked back. Sam Duff (JR/Fort Collins, Colo.) gave Cornell a 2-0 lead 10 minutes later.
Later in the half, Benavidez provided an assist to Garrett Wicker (SR/Baldwin, Wis.) for the third goal 15 minutes before the final whistle. Justin Howe (SO/Sedalia, Colo.) finished off the fantastic half with a goal of his own with less than 10 minutes remaining. Gabriel Ximenes (SR/Brasilia, Brazil) provided the assist.
Cornell outshot Buena Vista (1-6-3) by a 23-10 margin. Benavidez led the Rams with six shots.
Daniel Edwards (SO/Lake Worth, Fla.), Andrew Lopez (FR/Aurora, Colo.) and Duff had three shots apiece. Tyler Davis (JR/St. Andrews, Jamaica), Wicker and Howe each took two shots. Blake Soto (FR/Oak Park, Ill.) and Galen Westervelt (FR/Lopez Island, Wash.) had one shot each.
Tom Gallagher (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) started in goal for the Rams. He played all 90 minutes and made four saves.
Coming up – The Rams travel to play MWC conference foe Monmouth (6-3-1 overall, 1-0-1 MWC) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
