MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's women's soccer team recorded a second-half comeback win, 3-2, over University of Wisconsin-River Falls at home Sunday afternoon. With the win, Cornell extended its unbeaten streak to five matches.
Renee Wuest (JR/Minneapolis, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal from the penalty spot at the 79:21 mark in the game. The Falcon goalkeeper was able to get a hand on the ball, but couldn't keep it out. Sam O'Brien (SO/Evergreen, Colo.) drew the foul in the box to earn the penalty kick.
Maddalin Doran (FR/Maple Grove, Minn.) scored the goal to tie the game at 2-2, four minutes before the winning goal. A River Falls defender deflected a cross off of the crossbar and the ball fell right to Doran for the finish.
River Falls scored the first goal eight minutes into the game. Dajana Scott-Smith (JR/Aurora, Colo.) tied the game at 1-1 nine minutes later off an assist by Georgia James (SO/Rock City, Ill.). River Falls would get their second goal at the 33:42 mark to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
UW-River Falls (6-5-1 overall) outshot Cornell 14-12 for the game. Sofia Schnur (SR/Redwood City, Calif.) and Wuest led the Rams with three shots each. Doran attempted two shots. Ashley Quesada (SR/Blaine, Wash.), O'Brien, James, and Scott-Smith each had one shot.
Elise Thomason-Larsen (SO/Superior, Colo.) played the first 83 minutes in goal for the Rams (6-4-1 overall), she made five saves, all of them on the first half. Nicole Trenholm (SO/Plainfield, Ill.) finished the final seven minutes for Cornell.
Coming up – The Rams host MWC opponent Illinois College (5-7 overall, 0-3-0 MWC) at 1 p.m. next Sunday Oct. 13.
