Rams denied first MWC win, draw with Grinnell

GRINNELL – Cornell's men's soccer team battled host Grinnell College to a 3-3 draw after two overtimes in Midwest Conference action Wednesday evening.

The Rams looked like they were about to get their first conference victory of the season until the Pioneers (4-7-1 overall, 0-3-1 MWC) scored the equalizing goal with just five seconds left in the match. Neither team would find the back of the net in extra time.

Daniel Edwards (SO/Lake Worth, Fla.) scored the first goal on an assist from Facundo Benavidez (SR/Buenos Aires, Argentina) that gave the Rams an early lead at the 16:55 mark. Andrew Lopez (FR/Aurora, Colo.) gave Cornell a 2-0 lead right before the end of the first half.

Grinnell came out of halftime and scored two goals within the first ten minutes to tie the game at 2-2. Justin Howe (SO/Sedalia, Colo.) put Cornell back ahead at the 79:36 mark of the game before the late equalizer that sent the game to overtime.

Cornell (2-7-3 overall, 0-2-2 MWC) was outshot by Grinnell 28-18 in the game. Galen Westervelt (FR/Lopez Island, Wash.) and Lopez led the Rams with four shots each. Sam Duff (JR/Fort Collins, Colo.) and Tyler Davis (JR/St. Andrews, Jamaica) had three shots apiece. Howe attempted two shots, Garrett Wicker (SR/Baldwin, Wis.) and Edwards had one shot each.

Tom Gallagher (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) started the game in net for the Rams. He played all 110 minutes and made seven saves, six of which came in regular time.

Coming up – The Rams travel to play rival Coe College (4-7-0 overall) in a Bremner Cup match at 6 p.m. Saturday.
