CEDAR RAPIDS – The 129th meeting of the Cornell-Coe football series, postponed due to storms Saturday night, went off with a rare 5 p.m. Sunday start on a humid 85-degree night at Clark Field.
The Kohawks controlled the opening half and that was enough to claim a 38-0 victory over the Rams in the oldest college football rivalry west of the Mississippi River. With the win, Coe takes a 2-1 advantage in the 2019-20 Bremner Cup All-Sport Series.
Cornell (1-1) had trouble gaining any traction early as the physical Kohawks (1-1) built a 35-0 lead by halftime. Coe marched 66 yards on an 11-play touchdown drive on the game's opening possession and didn't look back.
Coe quarterback Quentin White tossed three TD passes in the first half, including a 30-yard connection that put the home team ahead 14-0 with 1:17 to go in the opening quarter. Cornell kept the margin at 14 points midway through the second quarter, when Coe pulled away with three TDs over the final 7:20.
The Kohawks held Cornell to 18 yards and one first down during a dominant first half, which they capped with a 56-yard punt return for a TD with 2:16 left before intermission.
Cornell started to move the ball in the second half, although saw each of its first three possessions end with a turnover. The Rams' best scoring chance stalled on a lost fumble at the Coe 18-yard line late in the third quarter.
The lone points of the second half were scored on a 21-yard field goal with 2:23 remaining.
Linebacker Colden Clark (SO/Mount Vernon, Iowa) led the Rams with a game-high nine tackles, including 1.5 for losses. Cornerback Demarius Pittman (SO/Denver, Colo.) came away with an interception and had two pass breakups. Alex Rupe (JR/Evergreen, Colo.) recorded a fumble recovery for Cornell, which limited the Kohawks to 142 yards in the second half.
The Rams managed 104 yards for the game, 41 coming from Trevhon Porterfield (JR/Minneola, Fla.) on 19 rushing attempts. Isaak Hahn (JR/Marion, Iowa) finished 6-of-10 passing for 45 yards and was sacked three times. Blake Langhurst (JR/Lisbon, Iowa) had four receptions for 45 yards.
Coe owned an eight-minute advantage in time of possession and limited the Rams to 1-of-13 on third-down conversions.
Coming up – The Rams, who are idle next weekend, play host to Midwest Conference North Division foe Lawrence (1-1) at 1 p.m. Sept. 28 at Van Metre Field at Ash Park.
