MOUNT VERNON – The Cornell men's soccer team fought hard, but fell 3-1 to Simpson at home Thursday afternoon.
Galen Westervelt (FR/Lopez Island, Wash.) scored his first goal for the Rams to cut the deficit to 2-1 12 minutes into the second half. He is Cornell's eighth different player to score a goal through the first six games. Daniel Edwards (SO/Lake Worth, Fla.) delivered the assist for the goal.
After Westervelt's score, the Rams pushed hard to send the match to overtime, which looked likely until Simpson capitalized on a breakaway with just over five minutes to play to make the score 3-1.
Simpson (6-1), picked fourth in the American Rivers Conference, opened the scoring after just 10 minutes.The Storm made it 2-0 just under two minutes into the second half.
Cornell (1-4-1) was outshot 16-3 on the day. Westervelt had two of the Rams' three attempts. Enzo Vanzillotta (SR/Porto Alegre, Brazil) had the other shot in the game.
Starting goalkeeper Tom Gallagher (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) played the first half for the Rams, making two saves. Dylan Terrell (JR/Hickory Hills, Ill.) played the second half in net, recording three saves.
Coming up – The Rams begin a seven-game road swing against Nebraska Wesleyan at 2 p.m. Sunday in Lincoln, Neb.
