Box Score 2 MOUNT VERNON – "I got 100 percent out of all my players."
Coach Peter Dumas' statement was delivered more than 12 hours after the first serve went off in Cornell's women's tennis double dual Sunday inside the Small Sport Center Arena.
That's all Dumas could have asked for as his Rams walked off the courts at about 9:15 p.m. with a hard-fought 5-4 victory in hand over Wisconsin Lutheran. Cornell was edged 5-4 by Simpson in the opening meet of the marathon day that began mid-morning. Both duals took more than four hours to complete.
Cornell's young squad showed competitive spirit in what were the final competitions of the fall season. The Rams finished 2-3 in the abbreviated campaign with four first-year players in the lineup.
Freshman Makayla Johnson clinched the team win over Wisconsin Lutheran with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles. The Rams also received singles wins from freshman Noelle Cerone (FR/Steamboat Springs, Colo.) (6-2, 6-1) at No. 3 and junior Amanda Dragon (JR/Mount Vernon, Iowa) (6-1, 6-2) at No. 4.
Cornell's No. 1 doubles tandem of Emmaline Fievet (JR/Bend, Ore.) and Cerone and No. 2 partners Liv Aractingi (SO/Kansas City, Mo.) and Dragon both won 8-3 decisions. Wisconsin Lutheran (1-3) made the meet interesting at the end, surviving three-set battles at No. 1, 2 and 5 singles.
Cerone, Dragon and Johnson all went 2-0 on the day in singles play. Against Simpson (4-2), Cerone and Dragon both won 6-2, 6-2, while Johnson cruised 6-2, 6-0.
Cornell's No. 3 doubles team of Ashley Mink (FR/Akron, Ohio) and Natalie Brandt (SO/Appleton, Wis.) posted an 8-2 victory over the Storm.
Cerone finished an impressive fall with a 3-1 mark in singles competition. Dragon and Johnson both went 3-2.
The Rams will be back in action in the spring. The competition schedule has yet to be determined.
