MOUNT VERNON – Cornell first-year head coach
Trent Schneider takes his women's tennis team north of the border later this week for three days of competition at the
Midwest Conference Team Tournament and
Individual Championships.
The Rams qualified for the MWC Team Tournament for the fifth time in the past six years. No. 4 seed Cornell (3-3 MWC) faces No. 1 seed Grinnell (6-0 MWC) in a semifinal at 9 a.m. Friday at Hitters SportsPlex in Middleton, Wis.
Friday's second semifinal pits No. 2 Lake Forest (5-1) against No. 3 Lawrence (4-2) at 12 p.m. The championship dual will be held one hour after the second semifinal Friday afternoon with an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
The Rams won two of their final three duals over the weekend to secure a postseason berth. They fell 9-0 to Grinnell in their previous matchup with a short-handed lineup Sept. 19.
The MWC Individual Championships get underway with the doubles tournament at 1 p.m. Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wis. The singles tournament starts at 9 a.m. Sunday.
The top two finishers in each of the nine flights earn all-conference recognition.
Senior
Emmaline Fievet carries an 8-5 record into the No. 1 singles bracket, where she is seeded third. Fievet went 4-2 in MWC singles matches this fall.
Sophomore
Makayla Johnson (4-9) is seeded fourth at No. 2 singles, sophomore
Ashley Mink (5-7) fifth at No. 3 singles, senior
Amanda Dragon (3-10) sixth at No. 4 singles, freshman
Kylie Jacobson (2-1) second at No. 5 singles and freshman
Kaylanna Seu (0-3) seventh at No. 6 singles.
In doubles, Cornell's No. 1 tandem of Fievet and Dragon is seeded fourth in the No. 1 flight with a 6-7 overall mark as partners. Johnson and Mink (4-5) are fourth at No. 2 doubles. Jacobson and Seu (1-2) are sixth at No. 3 doubles.
