Cornell completes season sweep of Tigers, 78-56

MOUNT VERNON – Junior Marcus Quirk (JR/Edinburgh, Scotland) notched his second double-double against Iowa Wesleyan in five days and the Rams rolled to a 78-56 victory in Wednesday's home basketball opener inside the Small Multi-Sport Center.

Quirk posted game-highs of 22 points and 13 rebounds, helping Cornell move to 2-1 on the season with its second 20-plus point victory over the Tigers (0-2).

Quirk, a 6-foot-6 forward, boosted his season averages to 20.3 points and 10.3 rebounds through three games.

The Rams had four players score in double figures, including a 14-point effort from junior sharp shooter Clayton Leipold (JR/Bloomington, Ill.) off the bench. Leipold accounted for 12 points during an impressive six-minute stretch in the first half. He finished 5-of-6 shooting from the field for the game with three 3-point goals.

Garriott Jones (SR/Indianapolis, Ind.) also drained three triples and totaled 14 points. Cooper Kabela (SR/West Branch, Iowa) added 10 points and five rebounds. Jordan Magnani (JR/Mount Pleasant, Iowa) contributed nine points, seven boards, three assists and a pair of steals.

A Magnani bucket gave the Rams a 45-31 cushion going into halftime. Cornell extended the lead to 59-37 early in the second half following a conventional 3-point play by Jones.

Cornell controlled the paint and held a 44-29 rebounding advantage. Ten of the Rams' boards came on the offensive end.

The Rams shot 48.4 percent from the floor, while limiting the visiting team to a 36.8-percent clip.

Coming up – The Rams travel to play Illinois College (0-0) at 5 p.m. Sunday in Jacksonville, Ill.
