Cornell upended by hot-shooting Kohawks

MOUNT VERNON – Coe's shooters got hot early and never cooled off in a 98-60 men's basketball win over Cornell Friday night inside the Small Sport Center.

The Kohawks (4-3) shot a blazing 68.3 percent from the field and were feeling it from long range, sinking 11-of-17 3-point goals. Cornell (2-3) endured a tough 34.0-percent shooting night and went 4-of-19 from 3-point range.

Senior Cooper Kabela (SR/West Branch, Iowa) paced three Cornell scorers in double figures with a game-high 20 points, a tick below his season average. Jordan Magnani (JR/Mount Pleasant, Iowa) chipped in 12 points, while Marcus Quirk (JR/Edinburgh, Scotland) contributed 11 points and a team-best seven rebounds.

Sophomore Trevor Boge (SO/Coggon, Iowa) provided seven points and four rebounds off Cornell's bench. Logan Sharp (SO/Des Moines, Iowa) added five rebounds.

The rivalry game got out of hand late in the first half with the Kohawks leading only 36-31. Coe proceeded to score 17 unanswered points over the final 3:43. The Kohawks led 53-31 at intermission, shooting 74.2 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

Cornell, which had won three of the previous four meetings against Coe, turned the ball over 21 times in the game which led to 32 points for the Kohawks.

The Rams hit 20-of-27 free throw attempts, with Kabela and Magnani going 11-of-11 collectively.

Cael Schmitt and Sam Auen led the Kohawks with 16 points apiece.

Coming up – The Rams play host to Illinois College at 2 p.m. March 7 in the Small Sport Center.
